VEG is looking for a skilled landscaper with an interest in working with ethically sourced timbers to create and install raised garden beds, chook houses, compost bays and other edible garden goodies! We are looking for passionate people who want to make a difference by helping families, schools and community groups grow more food and become more self-reliant. 

Who are we?

Very Edible Gardens has been designing and installing permaculture inspired edible gardens in and around Melbourne for 15 years with a strong focus on urban food production, backyard chicken systems, cypress wicking beds and other garden infrastructure. We provide DIY offerings for chook systems and wicking beds including wicking bed conversion kits shipped Australia wide.  VEG also offers design and education services including our Permaculture Design Course and workshops for councils.

The Role

Very Edible Gardens is looking for a new team member to join our workshop, warehouse, and edible gardening team on a casual basis.

The role is diverse and sees you in the workshop cutting and preparing plastic liners and timber for wicking garden beds, constructing bespoke chook houses and other garden infrastructure. On site work involves  installing all manner of edible gardens, wicking beds and chook systems and taking a leading role on landscaping jobs which include hardscaping, softscaping and irrigation systems.

You will be working out of our warehouse and workshop in Brunswick, Vic and at various locations around Melbourne.

The role initially being 1 – 3 days a week.

Duties

  • Loading and unloading of timber orders by hand and forklift 
  • Cutting and predrilling of DIY wicking beds kit sets
  • Construction of VEG small and large chook houses
  • Cutting of timber for chook straw yards and construction of gates and hatches
  • Ripping and planing of timber
  • Take an active role in existing and future product development
  • Driving of work vehicles for delivery of orders and travel to work sites
  • Onsite construction of wicking beds including manual handling of bulk materials into the beds
  • Onsite construction of chook straw yards including use of angle grinders, electric staplers and other tools
  • General landscaping works including; paving using step stones and brick, steel edging, drip irrigation systems, planting.
  • Cleaning and maintaining work areas.

Essential Criteria

  • Physically fit and able to perform manual and heavy lifting duties
  • Carpentry and landscape construction skills and experience
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Confident with hand tools and power tools including; mitre saw, band saw, table saw, thicknesser, drill, driver, router etc.
  • Interested in learning new skills
  • Passionate about working with a sustainable and ethically oriented business
  • Current drivers license

Desirable Criteria

  • Actively involved in or passionate about edible gardening, urban agriculture, backyard food security and permaculture
  • Experience around the landscaping and landscape construction industry
  • Experience in fencing, retaining walls and garden edging
  • Experience in various types of paving and hardscaping
  • Passion for product design and development
  • General computer skills including CAD
  • Working with children check
  • Fork lift licence 

Pay

The position pays above award rates and includes super and bonuses.
