Two One roles on offer – October 2020

Very Edible Gardens has been designing and installing permaculture inspired gardens in and around Melbourne for the past eleven years. With a strong focus on backyard food production, chicken systems and cypress wicking beds. We provide DIY offerings for chook systems and wicking beds including wicking bed conversion kits shipped Australia wide. 

(1) The Landscape installer role: 

Very Edible Gardens is looking for experienced and knowledgeable landscape industry folk to join our landscape construction and edible gardening team progressing towards the role of leading hand and site supervisor.

They will work with the current VEG landscaping team and permaculture design team to implement VEG Permaculture designs, backyard chicken systems, wicking beds and more in the metropolitan Melbourne area. 

We are looking for friendly, fun, positive individuals with a passion for edible gardening and sustainability who have skills and experience with timber projects, hardscaping and soft scaping, garden irrigation, customer service and ongoing customer relations.  

Duties include:

  • Working with the landscaping manager to plan installs of permaculture designs and other VEG projects.
  • Constructing timber veggie beds and wicking beds.
  • Constructing chicken runs and straw yards.
  • Implementation of food forest plantings and edibles focused planting schemes.
  • Garden edging, paving and potentially the occasional retaining wall.
  • Sheet mulching.
  • Setup and programming of drip irrigation systems.
  • Tree pruning and garden maintenance of VEG installed gardens.
  • Ongoing communications with clients during and after installations.
  • Updating social media accounts with job progress and other relevant posts.

Key criteria:

  • Excellent communication and people skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills. 
  • Excellent attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
  • Punctual with a professional attitude.
  • Current drivers licence.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual and heavy lifting duties.
  • Experience in the landscaping and landscape construction industry.
  • Experience with basic timber construction techniques.
  • Confident with hand tools and power tools including mitre saws.
  • Ability to follow plans with an understanding of topography and site leveling techniques.
  • Is well presented, genuine, polite and respectful to clients and team mates.
  • Can work independently or as part of a team.
  • An understanding of permaculture ethics and principles.
  • General understanding of horticulture, edible gardening.

Desirable criteria:

  • Actively involved in and passionate about edible gardening, urban agriculture, backyard food security, permaculture and edible forest garden design.
  • Advanced plant and horticulture knowledge.
  • Experience in advanced carpentry or joinery techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience in various composting methods and techniques.
  • An interest in learning new skills and best practice techniques.
  • An interest in sustainability education.

(2) The Retail admin whiz role Under Application

The role is primarily Brunswick based at our HQ with remote work also possible for a portion of the workload – it’s estimated to be currently about 15hrs per week (with room to grow, esp. into 2021), and ideally spread across the week.

The task outlines include:

  • Fielding initial-contact emails (web form queries, direct emails) for VEG Doing Stuff (inc. wicking beds, chook systems and edible landscaping)
  • Handling quotes (initially straight forward ones, leading to most/all over time)
  • Spreadsheet support work
  • Website support inc. content text and image management
  • Social media support
  • Stock ordering and inventory support
  • Internal comms and systems support work inc. Trello, Google Drive etc.

Heading into 2021 you’d also be taking on more of the warehouse picking, packing and sending wicking conversion kits orders, so some physical work will also be involved. 

This role is all about customer service and what you don’t already know about the finer points of wicking beds, chook systems and the like, we’ll teach you!
