Ever wondered how to naturally boost your garden's soil health? 🌱 Green manure or cover crops could be just what you need!

Planting cover crops means sowing specific plants 🌼 in your garden beds during their fallow periods (the breaks between main crops). These plants bring several key benefits to your soil:

🌿 Increased Nitrogen: Legumes, like peas and beans, "fix" nitrogen from the air, enriching the soil for future plants.

🌾Improved Soil Structure: Varieties such as mustard and ryegrass contribute organic matter, enhancing drainage and aeration.

☀️ Weed Suppression: A robust cover crop provides shade over the soil, discouraging weed growth.

Enhanced Biodiversity: Flowering cover crops draw in beneficial insects, including pollinators, to your garden. 🐝🦋

Cover crops can be chopped and dropped, dug into the soil or tractored down using chooks to really give your system a boost. 🐔

What's in an Autumn cover crop mix? Common choices include peas, broad beans, mustard, vetch, buckwheat, clover, ryegrass, and more. Most local seed suppliers will have a seasonal mix ready to go or you can blend your own.

Two years ago, Very Edible Gardens embarked on an

Two years ago, Very Edible Gardens embarked on an exciting journey with Toyota and Green Options to establish a one-of-a-kind community garden at their Centre of Excellence in Altona. As part of their ongoing commitment to sustainability, they enlisted us to design, build, and plant 18 large wicking beds. These included a combination of beds with our dressed top capping and integrated bench seats to create a functional and inviting gathering space for staff as well as a lush resource for their on-site kitchen. 🌱 🍽️

The majority of the garden was planted with a diverse selection of seasonal vegetables destined for the kitchen. The central beds with bench seating featured perennial vegetables, herbs, and flowers specifically chosen to attract and support beneficial insects and pollinators. 🐝🌼

We also had the privilege of running two successful gardening workshops on-site to empower staff with the knowledge of when to pick and how to manage their new garden. Their internal gardening club invites staff to be a part of the garden and at last check, boasted well over 30 members. 🌻

Toyota has plans to keep the space evolving. This includes composting kitchen waste back into the garden and utilizing rainwater collected on-site to fill the beds. The whole project aims to achieve a closed-loop system, turning waste into food and becoming as self-reliant as possible. 🔄

This initiative by Toyota is truly inspirational. It demonstrates how large businesses can make a significant impact towards a more sustainable and food-secure future, providing a valuable amenity for their staff in the process. 🌏

As we wave goodbye to the recent heatwave, those who've been diligent with watering might still be enjoying a packed and bountiful garden. However, there will be many who are looking at, or already getting stuck into, the next round of planting. 🍅➡️🥦

Currently, we're clearing out the last of the tomatoes and zucchinis, sending the precious biomass through the compost to rejuvenate our gardens soon. It’s a great time to start collecting materials to build your next compost pile with the Autumn leaf fall just around the corner. 🌿🌼

Have you ever considered a green manure crop? It can be a fun and effective way to rejuvenate your soil after a busy growing season especially if you have a few plots and like to practice drop rotation.

While the summer warmth lingers and the sun still packs a punch, remember to protect or delay planting those sensitive plants that might bolt, such as coriander or lettuce.

Repost from @yarravillecommunitycentre ... Yesterday’s launch of YCC’s community composting hub was nothing short of rewarding and so worthwhile. This project has brought local residents together in sustainable waste management practices and is another step forward in greener living. In partnership with the @cityofmaribyrnong's @mysmartgarden Project and
@veryediblegardens, planning commenced in November 2023 making this initiative possible today. Starting the day with very educational Composting Conversations workshop led by Adam Grubb, the day followed with the composting hub unveiling and BBQ to celebrate.

YCC would like to thank the @cityofmaribyrnong Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam in opening the day's celebrations. Along with Bernadette Thomas @bernadettegreens, Sustainability Officer at the City of Maribyrnong Robyn Daly, Adam Grubb Director of Very Edible Gardens, Yarraville Community Centre's CEO Christine McCall, Michael Slee local resident, and our generous volunteers Monty, Juniper, Mason, James, Yoojung, Therese, Mirella and many other helping hands who assisted in the day’s events.
